Planning out a square-foot garden can be an exciting and fun activity for anyone who loves gardening. A square-foot garden is a type of gardening style that maximizes the space by dividing the garden into smaller squares, making it easier to manage and maintain. However, before you start digging and planting, it's important to plan out what will go in and how you will organize your garden. Here are some tips and tricks to help you get started:

The first step in planning your square-foot garden is to decide how big you want it to be. A typical square-foot garden is usually 4 feet by 4 feet, which gives you 16 square feet of gardening space. However, depending on your available space and gardening needs you can make your garden bigger or smaller. If you are just beginning, you garden journey I recommended starting small.

To visualize your gardens design, sketch out the layout on a piece of paper or use a garden design app. The Plan-a-Garden app created by Better Homes and Gardens is a wonderful option. If you decided to do a sketch on your own start by dividing your garden plot into smaller squares (usually 1 foot by 1 foot) and then decide which plants grow in each square. There has to be adequate space in between your plants so make sure and account for it.

There is a lot to consider when choosing which plants, you would like to grow. I suggest doing extensive research on each plant you intend to grow in order to fully understand their needs and save yourself some heartache later. For instance, the amount of sunlight your garden will receive, the soil quality, the climate of your area, the size of your plants and what plants may or may not grow well together in the same space.

When building your sketch consider how accessible your garden will be. Adding pathways between the square-foot plots is recommended. This will allow you to move around your garden and tend to your plants without having to step in the plot and risk damaging plants. Additionally, trellises can be used to support climbing plants and vegetables such as tomatoes, peas, beans, and cucumbers. You will want to include trellises in your sketch so you can accurately plan for the spacing.

In conclusion, planning your square-foot garden with a visual sketch is an essential step in creating a beautiful and productive garden by determining garden size, choosing the right plants, as well as adding pathways and trellises. By following these simple steps, you too can create a thriving and beautiful garden that will provide you with fresh fruits and vegetables throughout the growing season. Happy Gardening!!

I don't personally use paper to do my garden planning I use a whiteboard grid planner and it is amazing. The link is below if you would like to try it out.
